Aldergrove Skating Club members were out in the rain selling hotdogs and performing on the pavement at Otter Co-op on Sunday, April 28, raising funds for their sport.

The club aims to keep skating affordable, explained president Cashmere Roder, and offers beginner lessons for skating, figure skating, and synchronized skating teams for kids and adults.

“We have skaters ranging in ages from two to 81,” she estimated.

Sunday’s fundraiser was a first for the club, which usually hosts clothing drives or bottle drives – which is ongoing and people can donate to any Return-It depot with account number 6048571696.

About 100 hotdogs were sold and $800 was raised for the club, some members of the public donating without a purchase, Roder recalled.

“It was really uplifting for the girls to have a good day out and have some fun and enjoy time together,” Roder said. “The girls were able to demonstrate their routine off the ice.”

This year is the club’s 50th, having been founded in 1974.

Roder said she is in the early stages of planning a “birthday” party to celebrate the club.

“I thought celebrating it as a birthday would be more fun,” she chuckled.

Currently, the home base ice rink at Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre is being expanded so the club is temporarily operating out of Abbotsford.

Once the expansion is complete though, Roder expects to hold the birthday party there.
