Gumboot Gala benefits Langley Farmers’ Market June 10

Get on you gum boots dancing shoes for the second gala of locally sourced food and fun

Get your gumboots on, and come on out to the the second annual Langley Community Farmers Market Society’s Gumboot Gala. It happens on Saturday, June 10 from 5 to 11 p.m. in the banquet hall of the Langley Seniors’ Resource Centre.

The Gumboot Gala will be a night of dinner and dancing to celebrate local makers, bakers and growers. Funds raised will help support programs such as the farmers market’s brand new Food Recovery Program and Nutritional Coupons Program, getting fresh food to low-income families and seniors in the community.

Langley Farm Market manager Cherise Gee is excited about the proven success of the Food Recovery Program.

In just three markets since the start of the season, more than 150 pounds of food has gone back to low-income families and to Ishtar Transition Housing for Women.

“Our chosen charities are Ishtar, the Seniors Centre, Blacklock Elementary’s breakfast program and the food banks,” said Gee.

“The goal is to go around with bins at the end of the market day and collect any veggies and fruits the farmers can give. The farmers are excited to be a part of it.”

The Gumboot Gala is one way to support all the farmers who participate in this program.

On the menu is a turkey dinner buffet locally sourced by market vendors.

The evening includes dancing, live auction, live band, 50/50 and boot draw.

Tickets are $40 and can be found on the Langley Community Farmers Market Facebook page.

The Langley market takes place every Wednesday in the courtyard of Kwantlen Polytechnic University from noon to 4:30 p.m. The market has around 50 vendors on site, live music, food trucks, a kids zone and tastings of craft beer.
