Abbotsford MP Ed Fast in hospital after suffering stroke

Longtime Member of Parliament 'expected to make a full recovery,' office says.

Ed Fast, Abbotsford's longtime Member of Parliament, is recovering in hospital after suffering a stroke at his home Saturday.

His office put out the following statement Tuesday morning:

"On Saturday, December 10, 2016, Mr. Fast suffered a stroke in his home in Abbotsford. He is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

"During this period of rehabilitation, the Fast family kindly requests privacy to ensure MP Fast can focus on his recovery and return to his parliamentary duties as soon as possible.

Fast, a Conservative, is currently the Official Opposition Critic for the Environment and Climate Change. Prior to the election of the Liberals in 2015, he served as Canada’s minister of international trade.

Fast, 61, was first elected to Parliament in the 2006 federal election. He won re-election in 2008, 2011 and 2016, all by double-digit margins.

Before running federally, Fast served on Abbotsford council, as well as on the Abbotsford school board.
