Police say a man has been arrested after allegedly running the Canada-U.S. border in Surrey, before crashing into a vehicle and unoccupied store in Vancouver’s west side.

In a statement Saturday, police said the man in his 20s allegedly drove a blue pickup truck bearing Oregon license plates through a border crossing without stopping just before 8:30 a.m.

The Vancouver police were notified of the incident by Surrey RCMP, and were able to locate the vehicle traveling around 16th Avenue and Oak Street. Attempts to stop the vehicle with the use of lights and sirens was unsuccesful and the driver refused to stop.

Police said officers pursued the truck to West 10th and Alma Street where it collided with a Mazda sedan and then crashed into an unoccupied retail shop. A 32-year-old man who was driving the Mazda was minorly injured.

The alleged border jumper was then arrested and placed in police custody. Vancouver police said it will be recommending charges of dangerous driving and causing a police pursuit.

“Investigators are now working with our partnering agencies to determine who this man is and why he ran the border,” said Const. Jason Doucette.
