An Aldergrove mother who lobbied Langley Township to build a new swimming pool here is now coordinating a drive to establish an Aldergrove Summer Swim Club.

The new Aldergrove Credit Union recreation centre currently under construction is projected to open to the public in June of 2018. This centre will include a six-lane 25-metre pool with a deep end and two diving boards. There will also be a secondary warmer pool with a gradual entry.

Joanne Nicolato says, “We have a fabulous new pool coming — let’s use it!”

Nicolato notes that “Aldergrove has a unique opportunity to be part of a fun sport for our community’s youth, (however), to have a swim club for next year we need to get our application in before January 2018.”

She has organized an information meeting aimed at Aldergrove parents of four year olds and up to get an Aldergrove swim club established in time for the pool’s opening. This meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 29, 6 p.m. at Alderbrook Health and Wellness Centre, 27028-A Fraser Hwy. This is Nicolato’s workplace and is adjacent to the new rec centre, in the same plaza as KFC.

“Aldergrove needs an identity. We need to feel community spirit. This community needs more activities that are local with a place that they can call their own. Aldergrove needs to feel pride,” says Nicolato.

“Can a swim club do this? Yes, I think it can help. As a mother of three children that swam with the Langley Flippers, Haney Neptunes and Abbotsford Whalers in summer swimming and water polo for 18 years, I can say that a swim club with all four aquatic sports is definitely needed here in Aldergrove.”

Nicolato says, “This is an opportunity for kids to be able to learn a beginner level entry aquatic sport easier when they can walk there or have less distance to drive. Training and competing in these sports as a beginner or someone who goes farther into higher levels of these sports, could lead to wonderful lifelong benefits.

“Currently I have heard from a few members of our community that are very interested in an Aldergrove swim club, but I don’t know exact numbers until we can move forward with this. The pool is scheduled to be completed in June of 2018. This would only give us the opportunity to have winter maintenance session for next year and no summer swimming until the summer of 2019. I am aware that there are challenges in starting a swim club such as finances, coaching, and directors etc., and we are not there yet but we need to start somewhere. We need community involvement to move forward on this awesome opportunity,” says Nicolato.

Families are invited to learn more and sign up their children at the Nov. 29 meeting. For more information call Nicolato at 604-856-9700 or email her at admin@ahwca.ca
