A Burnaby man who’s been living in B.C. for 61 years is the province's latest lottery winner, taking home $25.9 million.

Marcello Battiston, 81, said he could hardly believe that he’d won the whole pot with the Lotto Max ticket he’d bought March 10 at International News at Brentwood Mall.

“It was a miracle. It was amazing,” said Battiston, who moved to B.C. from his home on the outskirts of Venice as a tradesman. “It was a Sunday morning. I went to church. I came home and my wife was playing on the computer.”

He told reporters Tuesday he didn’t go in to claim his ticket right away.

“I was waiting for my son to get home from his business trip and to make plans with my family.”

First item on the list? Taking his wife to Hawaii.

“And she wants a new kitchen,” said Battiston.

In September, he said he will visit Italy.

Beyond that, Battiston doesn’t have any plans for his winnings just yet. “I’ll put it in a safe place."
