Albert Walter Hays

Albert Walter Hays passed away peacefully with family at his side February 16, 2017 at Dr. Andrew Pavilion Extended Care Home in Summerland, BC. 'Bert' was 89 years of age and will be remembered and forever missed by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret, and all his family and friends. Bert is survived by his sister, Marjorie Butler, son Allan (Janet) Hays, daughters Bonnie (John) O'Neal, Leona (John) Carter, and Gail (Ken) Younghusband; 11 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Bert was predeceased by his brother Robert in 1928, his sister Doreen in 1935, his mother Dorothy in 1964, his daughter Colleen in 1971, his father Alvin in 1973, and his sister Audrey in 2001. Bert was born in Grande Prairie, AB in 1927 and lived his early years in Sexsmith until the family moved to Aldergrove, BC in 1943. He started his working life soon after and spent most of his career operating heavy equipment. He married Margaret in 1951 while working for the CNR Railway driving a bulldozer, keeping the tracks clear in the Fraser Canyon. Soon after, he started his own business, A.W. Hays Bulldozing and Trucking, which he operated very successfully in the Aldergrove area. A lot of land was cleared and a lot of basements were dug assisting with the growth of Aldergrove and Langley. In 1990 he retired from his hard work to even more hard work managing his hobby farm in Garnet Valley, Summerland, BC. In 2012 he moved to the Trout Creek area and just last May, to assisted living and then to extended care in October 2016. Bert will be remembered for his hospitality to family and friends and his love of the outdoors - fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and most of all, snowmobiling. He was always quick with a story to tell or an adventure to relive. The family's best memories are of the many picnics, anniversaries and birthdays held under the huge willow tree next to the creek running through the Garnet Valley farm. The hard work is done and now a good man can rest. He will be missed forever. A viewing will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral Ceremony at 1:00 p.m., both at Providence's Summerland Chapel, 13205 Rosedale Ave., Summerland, BC.
