SkyTrain is best choice

Editor:

Re: “Transit dinosaur is sucking taxpayers dry,” Star Letters, Oct. 13

D. Atkinson’s anti-SkyTrain missive is very clumsy, at best, and requires correction and clarification.

From a short-sighted perspective only, SkyTrain is a greater burden on the environment than is light rail because of SkyTrain’s methods and materials of construction but when considered in the long run, many years from now, SkyTrain will undoubtedly have been the most ecologically beneficial choice.

Most important, however, it cannot be emphasized enough: light rail cuts across many streets, thus negatively and very annoyingly affects stop-and-go traffic. Really, why, when there’s a completely non-obtrusive elevated-and-underground option such as SkyTrain, would we unnecessarily create considerably more traffic gridlock and pollution?

Let’s not allow such progressive forms of transportation, such as the long-overdue Evergreen Line, be thwarted by short-sighted critics of almost everything progressively green.
