Picking the losers?

In the Chilliwack/Hope by-election, John Martin (the criminologist) came in last, a distant third behind the NDP and Liberal candidates. Christy Clark said they began pursuing Martin to join the BC Liberals right after that by-election. What? In who’s world does being a loser enhance your public image and stature?
Christy’s response is, “We say all kinds of things to get elected. You have to kiss and make up in politics.”
Are the Liberals this desperate or did she recognize the need to get their own party’s ethics under review by recruiting their own in-house criminologist?
