Hawks shoot down Kodiaks

The Aldergrove Kodiaks came out strong in their junior B hockey home season opener, Sept. 21 at Aldergrove Arena, but a flurry of late goals resulted in a 4-2 win for the Delta Ice Hawks.

The Kodiaks have been showing great promise, as they beat the Port Moody Black Panthers 5-2 in an exhibition game last week, and the Panthers had beat the Hawks 4-2 in their home season opener the night before the Kodiaks-Hawks tilt.

The first two periods were end-to-end action and was scoreless until Kodiaks veteran Colton Precourt opened the scoring at 8:22 in the second, assisted by Thomas Hardy.

The Hawks Aaron Merrick evened it up a few seconds later, and the game remained tied until 2:23 in the third when Robert Genge, assisted by Hardy and Ryan Veillet, zinged in a shot on goalie Douglas Birks.

Hawks' Alex Martin evened it up at at 8:48 on a power play, and Merrick and Mitchell Pacey scored two more at 11:39 and 18:41.

The game was fairly even in penalties with five for the Kodiaks and four for the visitors, and shots were 43-33 for the Hawks.

Game first and second stars were Hawks' Merrick and Martin, respectively, with third star to hard-working Kodiaks' keeper Mark Menicucci.

Next up is a Saturday tilt at Port Moody and the next home game is Sept. 28 versus Ridge Meadows Flames.
