The Canada West Short Track Championships speed skating event comes to Abbotsford in 2018.

Abbotsford hosting national speed skating event in 2018

Canada West Short Track Championships coming to Abbotsford Centre next March

For the first time since 2001, Abbotsford will host a national speed skating competition.

Speed Skating Canada revealed its national competitions calendar for the 2017-18 season on Wednesday, and it was announced that the Canada West Short Track Championships will occur at the Abbotsford Centre on March 17 and 18 in 2018.

The last time a national competition came to town was in 2001, when the Olympic Short Track Selections were hosted at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre. Several Olympic teams also used ARC in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Abbotsford is the lone B.C. city to host any national short track events, with Fort St. John hosting the Canadian Junior Long Track Championships next February.

Other cities hosting national competitions include: Montreal, Calgary, Quebec City and Sherbrooke.

Abbotsford Centre hosted the B.C. Short Track Speed Skating Championships, which drew over 150 skaters, back in March.

Abbotsford previously hosted speed skating at the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games, when athletes competed at ARC that February.

This will be the first national level speed skating event to ever be hosted at Abbotsford Centre.

The Fraser Valley is home to the Matsqui Blades and Mission Racers speed skating clubs.

The 2016 Canada West Short Track Championships were hosted in Saskatoon and drew hundreds of competitors.
