Hat trick for Connorton: D.W. Poppy Secondary school's Amy Connorton (in white) scored three times in the overtime 3-2 win for Poppy over Thomas Haney Thunder at the Grade 8/9 Girls' Fraser Valley Soccer Championship.

Amy Connorton scored three times — including the golden goal in overtime — as the D.W. Poppy Redhawks captured the Grade 8/9 girls soccer Fraser Valley championship.

With the score tied at two and five minutes to play, Emily White’s corner kick found Connorton, who notched her hat trick goal in the 3-2 win over the host Thomas Haney Thunder.

The game was played May 19 at Thomas Haney Secondary.

After a scoreless first half, the Thunder struck early in the second half before Connorton notched back-to-back goals. But with two minutes to play, Haney converted a corner kick to force overtime.

The Thunder were the top seed for the Fraser Valley tournament while the Redhawks were ranked third. But the Poppy team got hot for the championships, winning 8-0 and 7-0 in the quarter-finals and semifinals, respectively.
