The Trinity Western Spartans will play for the Captains Cup.

The Spartans defeated the SFU Clan 2-1 on Saturday at the Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex and will face the UBC Thunderbirds for the right to hoist the inaugural Cup.

Elijah Vilio and Florian Niedermaier had the Spartans goals while SFU’s Daniell Lange was the lone person to beat TWU’s Silas Matthys.

“For the first game of the season, the guys played really well,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf. “There was some rust and some of the line combinations need to get worked out, but it was great to see that the compete level was there.

“Offensively, we had some good opportunities and with a little bit more chemistry, those things will start to click.”

The Spartans will play UBC — who beat SFU 8-3 earlier in the Captains Cup competition — on Sept. 30 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
