Facing an opponent missing some key players to injury, the Langley Fundamental Titans took full advantage.

The Titans topped the Langley Christian Lightning 3-0 on Thursday at the Langley Events Centre in the Langley District junior boys volleyball championship game.

Langley Fundamental won 25-13, 25-8 and 25-23 for the straight sets victory.

Titans coach Henderson Tran admitted that the Lightning’s injury situation played a key role in the outcome but also that his team played very well.

“We served well and were consistent and able to dig up a lot of balls and win the scramble plays,” he said.

Langley Christian had won the last two junior boys district titles with the Titans winning the two before that.

“They have a lot of friends over there so it is a lot of fun for them to win it every now and then,” Henderson said. ‘They really enjoy this rivalry.”

The Lightning were the top team during the regular season and beat the Mountain Eagles 3-0 in the semifinals while the Titans were the second seed and needed five sets to beat the Credo Christian Kodiaks in the other semifinal.

Both Langley Fundamental and Langley Christian advanced to the Fraser Valley championships, which run Nov. 6-9 in Abbotsford. Credo Christian beat Mountain in the third-place game and faced a wild-card game to see if they would join their Langley counterparts at the Fraser Valleys.
