WHAT’S IN STORE: Scotiabank prepares to re-open in downtown Langley

In this week’s column, editor Roxanne Hooper looks at happenings with a few financial institutions

Scotiabank is settling into its new digs very nicely, said branch manager Kelly Burkinshaw, who’s inviting Langleyites in for a look-see.

The downtown Langley branch of Scotiabank relocated from its long-time location in Highland Plaza to the Save-On-Foods mall at the end of February, and the team is planning a “grand re-opening” party to help officially mark the occasion.

Nothing too elaborate, just some light refreshments and a few door prizes added to an official ribbon-cutting ceremony that kicks off at about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17.

The entire 21-member team moved over to the new location, which was years in the planning and the better part of a year in construction.

“The planning process started many years ago as it was important to us find a new location while staying in our immediate community of downtown Langley,” Burkinshaw said.

If you’ll remember, several financial institutions have come under fire in recent years as they pulled out of locations in the City – leaving Scotiabank as the only one with a brick and mortar location literally in the downtown core.

“The Langley main Scotiabank branch has been here for nearly 50 years,” Burkinshaw added. “It was time for an update that allowed us to better serve our clients and the surrounding community; With the new location we’re now able to offer better parking and extended hours as late as 8 p.m.”

Members paid dividends

There’s some other news I want to share on the financial front.

Being an Aldergrove Credit Union member has its advantages – 1.56 million of them, in fact.

This year, the ACU’s loyalty program saw members receive the largest biggest payout in the institution’s history – $1.56 million, announced CEO Gus K. Hartl.

“This year’s payout is the biggest in memberSHARE’s history – and as a financial services cooperative, we consider it a great success when the amount we share with our members continues to grow year after year,” he said.

The credit union has a history of giving back to members and to the communities they serve. During the past 10 years, ACU has given nearly $14 million through profit sharing, charitable donations, sponsorships and community development projects.

Add to your datebook

Plus, here’s a few items you might want to add to your work calendar.

The Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce is hosting its monthly dinner meeting on Tuesday, April 16 at Cascades Casino, and this time up there are two MPs, two MLAs, and a mayor on tap to talk during their annual Langley Leadership Panel event.

Before that, on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 9, the local chamber is taking part in the 12th annual Fraser Valley chambers of commerce showcase happening in Abbotsford.

And for those in business in Aldergrove, ther’s a networking open house planned next Thursday, April 11, that might be worth datebooking. It’s being held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Boston Pizza in Aldergrove, offering a chance to meet some chamber directors.

Interested in attending any of these, visit www.langleychamber.com, or call 604-371-3770.
