2013 Special Olympics/BC Summer Games office open

Local volunteers are being sought to help with the 2013 Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Summer Games

Local volunteers are being sought to help with the 2013 Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Summer Games, an event that displays true skill and determination, and which will take place in Langley from July 11 to 14.

The Langley SOBC Games has opened its office in downtown Langley and is eager to register volunteers.

With the great support of the Township of Langley, City of Langley, and Langley School District, more than 1,100 athletes will come to town to compete in 11 different sports. More than 1,000 volunteers will be needed as well.

Arne Olson, chair of the 2013 Games Organizing Committee, shares his enthusiasm that, “Sport does something very special by providing an opportunity to eliminate barriers. The 2013 SOBC Summer Games gives us that opportunity to work together to achieve a community-minded event that will bring a lot of fun to all involved.”

To that end, the publicity campaign for the Games, which will launch next month, will include an invitation to Langley residents to “Be A Fan and Fill the Stands”, to attend the Games events and take part by cheering on the special athletes.

“We are asking all Langley residents to fill the stands at the Games events, most of which are taking place at the Langley Events Centre, McLeod Athletic Park and Walnut Grove Recreation Centre,” says Olson.

“It is an incredibly awe-inspiring experience to watch these athletes perform. Langley is an incredible community that values inclusivity. I look forward to seeing Langley offer these athletes a wonderful welcome.”

Starting Monday, March 4, the new Games office in Langley will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, except Thursday which will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Please call 604-533-2233 to volunteer.

Carol Madill has come on board as the office administrator for the 2013 Games, and she will be the welcoming face in the office to help all those who would like to get involved with the amazing Games experience.

The office is located at 20560 Fraser Highway (the former Coast Capital Building); call 604-533-2233, fax 604-533-2247 or email games@specialolympics.bc.ca
