Senior high school students in Langley are invited to sign up for the carpentry apprenticeship program at Aldergrove Secondary school.
The “ACE-IT” program offers students a college-level course that would normally cost $2,800 at no charge to the right applicants.
“It’s a level 1 carpentry apprenticeship over 20 weeks — a semester — that provides theory and technique, as well as job site safety certification and WHMIS certification,” said Aldergrove Secondary instructor Andy Gaumont.
“On successful completion students receive four to five course credits as well.”
With these qualifications the apprentices are able to work in the field for a couple of years after they find an employer who will indenture them, then take their level 2 course over a six-week period.
The next session begins in February 2015 and runs to June, and Aldergrove Secondary has room for 18 apprentices.
There are other ACE-IT programs offered in Langley School District for such trades as plumbing but it’s the only carpentry program offered by Langley. There are six similar programs offered in the Lower Mainland.
