Cadets parade for annual ceremonial review

The 1922 Royal Westminster Regiment Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps held their 73rd annual Ceremonial Review on Saturday, May 28 at the cadet training centre at the Canadian Forces' NRS Aldergrove.

A large audience of family members of the 30-member strong cadet corps viewed the parade and awards ceremony with pride.

The Ceremonial Review is a formal parade that demonstrates the achievements and success of cadets throughout the training year. Many months of preparation culminate in this important cadet event.

Reviewing Officer Major Kathy Kopan led the inspection. Special guests were MLA Darryl Plecas, Abbotsford Deputy Mayor Patricia Ross, Ret'd. Captain Bob Chessell and Robert Miner, representing the Legion Branch 265 Aldergrove, sponsors of the Royal Westminster Army Cadets.

Award winners are as follows:

Cpl. Oliver Cole received the Green Star.

Cpl. Ziyad Ladha received the Red Star.

MCpl. Jared Dehaan received the Silver Star.

Sgt. Vanessa Barrera received the Gold Star.

MCpl. Marcus McDonaugh received the Junior NCO Award.

WO Ruedi Uebelhardt received the Top All Round Cadet Award.

Sgt. Alex Weipert received the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence, presented by Robert Miner, representing the R.C. Legion Branch 265 Aldergrove, sponsors of the Royal Westminster Army Cadets.

Sgt. Brady Utas received the Lord Strathcona Medal, presented by Reviewing Officer Major Kathy Kopan CD. Sgt. Brady Utas also received the Senior NCO Award.

Two other local cadet corps will also be parading this weekend.

The Commanding Officer and Ship’s Company of 169 RCSCC Columbia will hold their 57th annual Ceremonial Review on Sunday, June 5 at 1 p.m. Parade will be held at CTC Aldergrove, 4315 - 272 Street, Aldergrove with a light reception to follow.

The 746 Lightning Hawk Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, based in Langley, will also be holding their annual Ceremonial Review on Saturday, June 4, 1:15 p.m. at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School, 6151 - 180 Street, Surrey.

The ceremonial reviews are open to the public to attend, and particularly welcome are any youth between 12-18 years of age interested in joining the cadet corps in September.
