• Discover Derby & Brae, through June. Series of walks and presentations at Derby Reach and Brae Island Regional Parks by notable naturalists and historians. All ages. Free, but registration required at www.drbipa.org. Presented by Derby Reach/ Brae Island Parks Association.

• Salmon Saturdays – Langley Environmental Partners (LEPS) hosts community events and volunteer opportunities on the last Saturday of each month.

Saturday, June 22

• National Indigenous Peoples’ Day events at Fort Langley National Historic Site run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Discover the roles played by Indigenous peoples at Fort Langley both then and now through demonstrations, storytelling, and hands-on activities. Highlights include Metis jig workshops with Lisa Shepherd at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., a traditional plants workshop at 11 a.m. with Deanna Miller, bannock-baking at 12 p.m. and a guided tour with Fern Gabriel at 1 p.m. Cost: $7.80/adult, $6.55/senior, annual pass holders and youth free. Traditional Plant workshop costs an additional $4.90.

• The Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society is celebrating National Indigenous People’s Day in Douglas Park from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

• 2019 Valley Ball Hockey Gold Medal Games are being held at George Preston Recreation Centre, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

• 4th Annual BC Cancer Foundation Poker Night Fundraiser starts at 5 p.m. (doors open 4 p.m.) at the Aldergrove Legion Hall, 26607 Fraser Hwy. Charity poker tournament with a $45 buy-in allows participants15,000 in chips. The ticket price includes snacks, a buffet dinner, first drink, door prizes, and more. There will be a $20 unlimited re-buy option until second break, as well as a cash bar, raffle ,and 50/50 draw. The top eight high-scoring players will get a payout (depending on ticket sales).

• Stay Gold Custom Car Show will be held at H.D. Stafford Middle School, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Community shredding event: Watch unwanted paper materials – old tax returns, credit card statements, any personal information – safely shredded, by donation. No need to remove staples or paperclips. All proceeds benefit seniors in the community. Tuk shop sale, BBQ, Mini Car Show. June 25-26

• A design workshop and an open house will be held for a Nicomekl River District Neighbourhood Plan. This is another Nexus of Community implementation project and it will guide land use change, development, and public space improvements for the area surrounding the Nicomekl River. The design workshop is June 25, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Mackie Room, Coast Hotel & Convention Centre. The open house is on June 26, from 6 to 8 p.m., on the Main Floor of Langley City Hall.

Wednesday, June 26

• Spineless Wonders of Water & Land, at Campbell Valley Regional Park, from 10 a.m. to noon. Pond dip and net sweep for hidden invertebrates to find out why they’re so important to the park. • Walk the trails of Irene Pearce Park with the Langley Field Naturalists. The area was turned into a park after pressure was exerted by the Council of Ratepayers and Langley Field Naturalists. It is part of the Municipal Nature Park with the Little Campbell River flowing through it, and has stands of mature Douglas Fir. Meet at 7 p.m. in the parking lot at 224th Street and 5th Avenue. • Langley Seniors Community Action Table in partnership with the Langley Division of Family Practice will host a free workshop on Brain Health, presented by Alzheimer Society of B.C. and sponsored by Langley Meals on Wheels.
