Learning was the focus of the Langley City Fire Rescue fire prevention open house on Thursday, May 8.
People went home with lots of information and a bit of homework.
Firefighters gave people worksheets to create escape plans for their homes, and checklists of safety equipment such as when they last put fresh batteries in smoke detectors.
For instance, the City's Emergency Preparedness Program had information booklets on many simple tasks people can perform to help them better weather an emergency, including assembling a grab-and-go disaster kit, dealing with hot weather, emergency preparedness for pets, and more.
The open house was set up in a passport format with people stopping by each information display to learn from firefighters or emergency program staff and volunteers. Each person who filled out their passport received a smoke detector and was entered into a draw.
Many city families attended with the kids enjoying free fire helmets and other goodies, and there were plenty of photos taken with Sparky the fire safety mascot.
