Chloe Bolongaro heard about the Loran Scholarship through her mom and now the Grade 12 student is a finalist for the prestigious program.
More than 5,000 students applied for the scholarship program that would provide up to $100,000 over four years of post-secondary. The D.W. Poppy Secondary student is among the shortlist of 88 candidates.
“When I was called about making it to the finals, I was ecstatic. I think I asked them quite a few times, ‘are you serious?’ After they had told me all the news I ran to tell my parents straight away,” she said.
Bolongaro has been through a regional interview process and awaits word on the next phase. The national selections take place in February.
After national selections, the Loran Scholars Foundation will grant 34 Loran Awards. The Loran Award includes annual stipends, tuition waivers from a partner university, mentorship, summer-internship funding, as well as annual retreats and forums. If not selected as a Loran Scholar, Chloe is eligible to receive a $5,000 finalist award. The Loran program assesses not only grades but also character, integrity, volunteerism, and leadership skills.
“I hope to study bio-mechanical engineering after high school and eventually work as an astronaut. I’m super excited to be representing Poppy,” Bolongaro said.
