The public will be gathering to honour the war dead and veterans at the cenotaph in Douglas Park on the morning of Nov. 11.
"On Monday, Nov. 11, Langley City will remember and honour those who lost their lives in war and armed conflict in service of our country," said Mayor Nathan Pachal. "It is also a time for us to reflect on what peace means."
The service will follow a traditional program, with greetings, "O Canada", invocation prayer, "Last Post", two minutes of silence, In Flanders Field reading, Lament, Rouse, Act of Remembrance, The Lord's Prayer and scripture reading, "O God Our Help in Ages Past", act of homage, wreath laying, "Amazing Grace", Benediction, and closing with "God Save the King."
The event typically attracts large crowds. The ceremony starts promptly at 10:50 a.m., so people are asked to arrive a little early to be in position for when the event begins.
Pachal noted that there is free parking at Timms Community Centre/City Hall (both the surface parking lot and underground). There is also street parking. Douglas Crescent from 204 Street to 206 Street, and a portion of Park Avenue will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Many people attending the City ceremony take part in the wreath laying. He laid out the protocol for being involved.
"If you want to purchase a wreath and lay it as part of the ceremony, there are two steps," he said.
People can purchase a wreath from a Royal Canadian Legion branch, either Cloverdale or Aldergrove.
Anyone planning to lay a wreath must email tedell@langleycity.ca by Nov. 8, and include the name of the person who will be laying the wreath and for what organization.
