A group of local Rotarians are hoping the mixed feelings around flying the Canadian flag ahead of Canada Day have disipated since last year, and hoping their main fundraiser can be restored to its past success.
For the fourth year in row, the Rotary Satellite Club of Langley Central Sunset is offering Langley residents the opportunity to show their Canadian pride this summer, while supporting Rotary projects in the community.
For a donation of $50, a full-size Canadian flag will be placed on their property for three statutory holiday weekends this summer – Canada Day, B.C. Day, and Labour Day – announced Travis Strain, the club’s flag committee chairperson.
“This is our club’s main fundraiser to help support local charities and non-profit organizations in Langley. We are all proud to be Canadian, and I can’t think of a better way to show that, than have a flag posted in our yard for each of this summer’s long weekends,” Strain said.
“What better way to show your Canadian pride and help out our local community.”
Strain emphasizes how easy it is to show Canadian pride in one’s yard.
“When you sign up, you let us know where you would like the flag to be placed, and a few days before the long weekend a Rotarian will show up to set up your flag. A few days after the holiday it will be taken down. You don’t have to lift a finger,” he explained.

Public relations director Lilianne Fuller described the satellite club as hands on in the community.
Recently, the small-but-growing satellite club has completed an outdoor classroom for Glenwood Elementary, as one of its major projects. In addition, the club recently refreshed and replanted the garden at the Langley Youth Hub.
“Fundraisers like the flag project provide us with the funds we need to help out those who may need a hand and demonstrate our commitment to ‘service above self.’ We thank everyone who supports us, and they can feel confident knowing they are making a difference in our community,” Fuller said.
“Last year’s was pretty much of a bust as many people decided not to fly the Canadian flag because of a bad connotation. We are hoping for better things this year,” she concluded.
