Cadets from 169 Columbia Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps volunteered with the Abbotsford Food Bank last Tuesday, helping prepare emergency food hampers for those in need.

The cadets assisted in sorting food donations into different categories, based on food type, nutrition, and quantity.

“It felt good to help people,” said Cadet Jodhan Brar, adding that, “It also shows those people respect,” a point that resonated with others in the group.

Lieutenant Navy Vanessa Stewart, commanding officer of the cadet group, said that community service activities, such as helping the Abbotsford Food Bank, are instrumental in meeting one of the most important aims of the Cadet Program: “To develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership”.

“As a youth leader, I hope that participation in a fun community service activity will inspire our cadets to take initiative by giving back to their own communities well after they leave our program and into their adult years.”

The cadets were happy to be participating in an activity that will help ensure the less fortunate in their community have a happy holiday season. “I had a lot of fun. It got the cadets into a different environment and working together,” said Cadet Quyntin Chidlow.

“It has a good impact on us. It helps us build leadership skills. It also has a positive impact on the community that needs our help.”

Based in Aldergrove, cadets with 169 Columbia regularly participate in community service activities within their surrounding communities. This was the corps’ second time volunteering with the Abbotsford Food Bank. They also participate in poppy sales, in support of the Aldergrove Legion, Adopt-a-Street, in the Township of Langley, and local park clean-ups, among other activities.
