After two years of fundraising the new $79,000 playground was officially opened at Peterson Road elementary school on Sept. 21.
The entire student body gathered to watch as student Ryan Janzen performed the ribbon cutting in front of the new playground, on a beautiful sunny last day of summer.
Principal Nathan Erker thanked the many parents and donors who made the facility possible, noting that Janzen was given the ribbon cutting honour due to his personal fundraising efforts. Janzen had forgone birthday presents and singlehandedly raised $400 of the $79,000 cost.
The students then clambered on the new playground structures, which provide intermediate students with more challenging workouts than the previous equipment had. The new equipment enables the game of "grounders" (akin to the game of tag) and provides "core conditioning" for the equipment's users.
The new equipment augments the existing primary students' playground equipment in the schoolyard.
Significant donations to this project came from Online Collision Langley, Langley Rotary Club, Matcon Civil Constructors, RMC Concrete, RBC Murrayville, the Township of Langley, along with numerous community donors.
The event was followed by a fundraising barbecue for the students, parents and staff on the school grounds.
