Garage sales are in full swing as the weather warms, and now Langley Township is organizing a community-wide day of driveway-based sales.

For many, this time of year inspires the need to declutter and organize. Spring cleaning makes room around the house and, inevitably, uncovers yesterday’s favourite objects. To help those once-loved items find a new home and encourage a cleaner, greener Langley, the Townshipis hosting its inaugural Township-wide Garage Sale on Saturday, May 25.

While most people are familiar with holding a garage sale on their own, the Township-wide Garage Sale is an opportunity for residents throughout the municipality to hold a sale at their property on a single, coordinated day. With numerous sales taking place at the same time, sellers will benefit from an influx of bargain hunters scouring the community for a deal, and savvy shoppers will have multiple options to find their perfect purchase. To encourage participation, the Township will advertise garage sale locations on the Township of Langley website, through social media, and in local newspapers leading up to the event.

The Township strives to be a leader in local environmentally-conscious initiatives, and the Township-wide Garage Sale is a new addition to the many re-use, recycling, and waste disposal events that occur throughout the year.

“Garage sales are about more than just finding a deal or making a little pocket change,” said Township of Langley solid waste coordinator Chris Combe. “They can have an impact on the environment by extending the life of an item that might have ended up in the landfill.” By participating, he adds, residents will not only reduce waste, they can have fun getting to know their neighbours and fellow community members.

When it’s time to hit the road on the big day, attendees can visit tol.ca/garagesale for an interactive online map of registered garage sale locations. Users can select and filter item category types and neighbourhoods to find out what is being sold and where. By mapping out a route before heading out, shoppers can save both time and emissions.

After the event, participants must remove and clean up any unsold materials from their property. Those who receive municipal collection service can arrange for the disposal of big leftover items by scheduling a large item pick up. Garage sale hosts can donate other leftover items to local re-use shops, recycle them at depots, or dispose of them at transfer stations.
