A group of ten artists from South Surrey, White Rock, and Langley are combining their talents and versatility for an upcoming art show and sale.

The Art by 10 exhibition runs Friday, June 2 from 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, June 3-4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be refreshments and live music at the opening reception on Friday between 6 and 8 p.m. Art by 10 will be held at the Turnbull Gallery at the South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre. Admission and parking is free.

In recent years the Turnbull Gallery has proven a successful venue for local artists who appreciate the assistance received from Semiahmoo Arts Council and the South Surrey White Rock Art Society.

Tammy Bailey, Audrey Bakewell, Cheryl Bodnar, Marilyn Kelm, Thelma Newbury, Marilyn Pearson, Virginia Pingel, Heather Quinney, Alyson Thorpe, and Sandra Tomchuk came to know each other through their membership in the South Surrey White Rock Art Society.

A grandmother and marathon runner, Tammy Bailey is an acrylic and mixed media artist. She facilitates Inspired Canvas Paint Nights. Tammy’s art is intuitively inspired, playful and bright.

Audrey Bakewell’s art is founded in both watercolour and acrylic with fluid application in both mediums. Her inspiration comes from both the Canadian landscape and her travels abroad.

Cheryl Bodnar is a retired ICU nurse who has sketched and painted for many years. Inspired by nature and everyday life, she loves to paint in both oil and acrylic.

Starting her journey as an artist in mid-life, Marilyn Kelm has been following her goal of being creative and constantly learning. Lately she has been creating “a moment in time” figurines with a product from Denmark called paverpol.

Vancouver born artist Thelma Newbury works with fabric and fibres. Influenced by the scenes and nature around her, Thelma loves working with vibrant colours.

Marilyn Pearson is a relatively new artist who is constantly challenging herself with different techniques and painting methods. At present acrylic painting is her focus.

Originally from Mexico City now living in Langley, Virginia Pingel studied art and found painting to be a soothing hobby in her stressful life. Now retired Virginia has the time to explore different techniques in oil, acrylic, pastel, and watercolour. Painting has become her passion.

Heather Quinney has been painting and drawing since childhood. She explains: “For me creating is as necessary as breathing.”

Alyson Thorpe’s delicate style captures the transparency and freshness of watercolour in her glowing florals. Originally from the Maritimes, she is inspired by the natural beauty of the west coast.

Long time White Rock resident Sandra Tomchuk works with a variety of mediums and is mostly known for her whimsical umbrella girls and abstracts. Sandra and a fellow artist have created an Ocean Escape Series, with both of them painting on the same canvas, creating a unique style.

The Turnbull Gallery is located in the South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre, 14601 - 20 Ave. (in the South Surrey Athletic Park Area). Opening reception on Friday, June 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. is sponsored by the City of Surrey in conjunction with their Healthy Active Aging Conference that weekend.
