Fraser Valley Music Awards honour artists in 15 categories

Recipients named from Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission and Langley

CIVL Radio presented the Fraser Valley Music Awards to musicians in 15 categories over the weekend.

The awards were presented during the AbbyFest celebration on Saturday at Abbotsford Centre.

Mamarudegyal MTHC of Burnaby won two awards, with recognitions in the Hip Hop Female and Queer Artist pools.

The other recipients were:

– Patrick Joliceour of Abbotsford – Best Pop Artist;

– Future Father Figures of Abbotsford – Folk;

– Kristin Witko of Abbotsford – Experimental;

– Kyler Pierce of Abbotsford – Country;

– Travis Murray of Abbotsford – Electronic;

– Darkest of the Hillside Thickets of Chilliwack – Rock;

– Blessed of Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack – Loud;

– HopeSKS from the Leq’a:mel First Nation – Hip Hop Male;

– David Gogo of Mission – Blues;

– Laura of The Kwerks, Langley – Excellence in Performance by a Female Artist;

– Brander Raven McDonald of Chilliwack – Excellence in Performance by a First Nations Artist;

– Jada Klein of Abbotsford – Excellence in Performance by a Youth Artist; and

– Molly’s Reach of Abbotsford – 2016 Dakota Leslie Memorial Live Performer of the Year Award.

Separate cash prizes and other awards were presented, including local gigs, studio recording time and social media management for two months.

For this year’s Live Performance of the Year Award, a surprise announcement was made that each of the five performers making it to the final round would receive a cash prize.

Western Jaguar, The WhiskeyJays, Corey Primus and Ben Cottrill each received $250, while the Molten Blues Band took home the $750 grand prize.
