Langley car club members don't slow down their fundraising

Club is very active, donating to health care, the Salvation Army and food bank, as well as funding four $1,000 scolarships annually.

The Langley Loafers Hot Rod Club members drive vehicles from bygone days but are helping Langley Memorial Hospital keep up with medical advancements.

The club recently donated $20,000 for urology technology to the Langley Community Health & Hospital Foundation (former the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation).

"We wanted to pick [a cause] based in Langley," president Steve McEwan explained. "We wanted it for something close to home."

On hand to accept the donation was Dr. Jason Archambault, a urologist at LMH, no stranger to the car club members.

"He's see probably 75 per cent of the guys [in the club]," McEwan quipped.

The funds will be earmarked for a $150,000 video surgical system for which the foundation is fundraising. Archambault explained that it allows for better viewing of the bladder.

The club has about two-dozen members and has been around since 1957. It hosts the annual B.C. Old Time Drags, the source of the funds for charity, and the 2025 event is the 60th anniversary.

"The car community in Langley is so vibrant," McEwan said.

Despite an aging membership, the club is very active, supporting the community with donations such as the one for hospital equipment as well as funding four $1,000 scholarships annually through the Langley School District. The car club also made donations to the Salvation Army and Langley Food Bank.

It's not the first sizable donation to the local hospital.

"We did one probably 15 years ago," he said.
