A suspect in an alleged Newton sexual assault has been charged.

Ajastar Singh, 59, is charged with sexual assault and sexual interference of a person under age 16.

Singh has appeared in Surrey provincial court and was released with multiple conditions, pending his next appearance, including having no contact with children under 16, not attending public places where children 16 would likely be present, and not doing work or volunteering that involves working with children under age 16.

"As the matter is before the court, no further information will be provided," Surrey RCMP Sgt. James Mason said.

The investigation began after Surrey Mounties on May 4, 2003 received a report that a 15-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted "at or in the area of" the Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sikh temple, in the 15200-block of 68 Avenue.

Police said the suspect was employed at the temple and his employer had been advised of the allegations against him and conditions of his release.
