Langley dancer part of seasonal ballet

Sophie Werdal takes on 'playful, sassy' role with Coastal City Ballet

It's a rather rigourous routine.

Ballet dancer Sophie Werdal has been travelling on a daily basis back and forth from Langley to Vancouver to prepare for this Saturday’s Coastal City Ballet December show.

Coastal City Ballet is delighted to open its 14th season with a performance featuring excerpts from the Spanish brilliance of Petipa’s Paquita, and the evening’s program will also include the premiere of the newly commissioned works “Rhapsody in Blue” by choreographer Stephana Arnold, alongside the Canadian premiere of “Cloudburst” by Ruaidhri Maguire.

Dancing since age four, Langley’s Werdal is a ballet core member in the company’s production of “Paquita,” as well as in the premiere of “Rhapsody in Blue,” where she portrays a playful and sassy characterization.

“All her hard work can be seen on stage,” said Igor Gomes, company manager and lead instructor for Coastal City Ballet.

Originally from Vancouver, the local dancer trained under the Royal Academy of Dance ballet, she danced at Cameron Dance Academy, Dance Collective, and Tri-City Dance Centre, completing her RAD exams and studying for her Solo Seal exam this year.

She has danced in productions of “The Nutcracker” and “Coppelia,” plus participated in international and local competitions earning scholarships and opportunities to represent different festivals at provincials in the ballet level three and excellence levels.

Werdal said she’s “thrilled to have the privilege to dance” with the Coastal City Ballet.

The Coastal City Ballet show is this Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Norm Rothstein Theatre in Vancouver.

Everyone including children of any age requires a ticket, available at 1-888-961-6111, Ext 101.
