Jimmy Shine has been coming to the Langley Good Times Cruise-In for about eight years, and every year he says is a great time.
"I can't believe how big this year is, this is 2024 and there's a lot of new cars out there too," he said.
Shine had spent 20 years working under his hero Pete Chapouris at the So-Cal Speed Shop, and quickly became a well known superstar car builder himself.
The Shine award tradition to select the best in the car show was unexpected, he said.
"It kinda turned into this perpetual thing," Shine explained.
"Every year, it's something new, its something you wouldn't expect. It's the highest calibre."
He likes the diverse nature of the show.
"It's very eclectic," Shine commented. "It's everything across the board."
As is tradition, last year's winner, Tony Walcott, had the final call on the winning vehicle for the Shine award, which was picked from a short list of 11 cars.
This year's winner was Rob Clough with a 1956 Volkswagen.
"He didn't miss anything, it was immaculate and flawless," Walcott said.
Clough will be selecting the Shine award winner at the 2025 Cruise-In.
A new award was introduced this year, Good Young Guns, aimed at supporting youth in the car building hobby.
Sean Sinclaire said a lot of doors opened up for him in the hot rod industry after winning the Jimmy Shine award.
"I started doing this at 51 and what I see that this culture needs is we got to mentor the young guys into our hobbies, into the industry," he said.
Three Good Young Guns awards were given out this year, thanks to sponsorships from Lordco, Reckless Restorations, and So-Cal Speed Shop.
Third and second place went to sisters Alicia and Shaylin Clough, and first place went to Jackson Foxley.
"For me, this hobby which is now my career, and my passion is to get young people involved in this, and it's great to see the enthusiasm that I got from the entries today," Sinclaire said.
Similar to the Jimmy Shine award, Sinclaire said the Good Young Guns award will return each year as well. And the first place winner will help choose the winner at next year's car show.
"So we'll grow this, and it'll get better and better every year."
