The family-run Twilight Drive-In theatre in Aldergrove wraps up its 2023 season this weekend with holiday favourites.
Each year since 2005, the drive-in runs from March to November, featuring films in the twilight hours of the evening for people to watch from the comfort of their vehicles.
On Friday, Elf starring Will Ferrell plays at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary. Following it is the 1983 film A Christmas Story for its 40th anniversary at 8:15 p.m.
Starting earlier on Saturday, The Grinch starts the evening at 5:30, followed by Planes, Trains, and Automobiles at 7:10 p.m.
The final night of the season starts strong featuring The Polar Express at 5, followed by National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation at 6:50 p.m. on Sunday.
Twilight Drive-In will return in 2024 for possibly its last season.
In June this year, owner Jay Daulat said on social media that Twilight will be shutting down after the 2024 summer, citing property taxes as the reason.
“It is with heavy heart that we announce today that next season will be the last for the drive-in,” they shared at the time.
Property taxes on the Aldergrove location, at 260th Street and Fraser Highway, have increased 260 per cent during the past three years – 72 per cent this year alone, they said.
“Our landlord has informed us that they will not be renewing our lease.”
A petition was quickly launched in support of keeping the drive-in, and Township Mayor Eric Woodward won unanimous support from council for a review of options to keep Aldergrove’s Twilight Drive-In theatre open.
Woodward told council at the time that he had met with the operators of the drive-in, who explained 16.8 per cent of their customer base is local, with the rest, more than 80 per cent coming from outside Aldergrove and Langley, making the theatre a destination that draws people from as far away as Vancouver Island.
According to the www.driveinmovie.com website, the Aldergrove theatre is one of only three surviving drive-ins in the entire province, with the others being the the Starlight in Enderby, and the Park in Prince George.
