Parents of students at several Langley schools were asked to come and pick up their children on Monday as power failures at the schools were expected to last several hours.

The affected schools were Glenwood Elementary, North Otter Elementary, Wix-Brown Elementary, D.W. Poppy Secondary, and R.E. Mountain Secondary. A closure order for Vanguard Secondary had been lifted after power was restored there.

The Langley School District noted on its website that at the elementary level, students would not be dismissed until families arrived to pick them up, but at Vanguard, students were to be dismissed sooner.

Power was out at numerous schools across Langley, as thousands of homes and businesses were in the dark as a powerful rain and windstorm hit overnight and into the morning of Monday, Nov. 4.

A full 14 schools had reported power failures, but classes were continuing at most of them.

Schools with power failures:

Brookswood Secondary

H.D. Stafford Middle

Langley Fundamental Middle and Secondary

Uplands Elementary

R.E. Mountain Secondary

Peter Ewart Middle

Richard Bulpitt Elementary

Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary

Willoughby Elementary

D.W. Poppy Secondary

Wix-Brown Elementary

Vanguard Secondary

Peterson Road Elementary

North Otter Elementary

In addition to the schools, Langley Township announced that the George Preston Recreation Centre in Brookswood would be closed due to a power failure until further notice, and in Fort Langley, the Fort Langley National Historic site was also closed.
