Volunteer award nominations open in Langley Township

A duo, an individual adult, and a student can be nominated in different categories

Nominations are open for the 2024 Volunteer Awards in Langley Township, with three major categories set to be recognized again this year.

Every year, the Township bestows the Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award, the John and Murial Arnason Award, and the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award on local residents who have given back to their community in a meaningful way.

The Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award recognizes someone who has enhanced Langley's quality of life and community spirit through creative, cultural physical, or social pursuits.

The John and Muriel Arnason Award recognizes a pair of individuals who volunteer together to make Langley a better place.

The Pete Swensson award is for a Grade 11 or 12 student who has a combination of athletic and academic achievements, leadership skills, and commitment to their community.

Each is named after a significant figure from Langley's past.

Flowerdew was a parks and recreation commissioner, as well as an elected school trustee and Township councillor.

The Arnason award is named after Muriel Arnason, one of the Township's longest-serving councillors, and her husband John.

Swensson was an athlete, photographer, the Township's first recreation director, and the creator of the annual Langley Walk.

Nomination forms and award criteria are available at tol.ca/awards.

Recipients of the Flowerdew and Arnason awards receive a monetary award that they can contribute to a charity or society that supports Township residents. The Swensson award winning student will receive a $1,500 scholarship.

Nominations from the public are accepted for the Flowerdew and Arnason awards, while the Swensson award nominations are determined by senior school staff, with one nomination per high school.

The nomination deadline is Monday, Feb. 24.

The awards will be presented at the Township of Langley Volunteer Appreciation and Awards Evening on Thursday, April 10.
