A nine year old cancer survivor from Aldergrove exceeded his expectations in fund-raising for the Cops For Cancer - Tour De Valley 2017.

Xavier Maynard, a junior member of Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley, raised well over $1,000 for the cause this year. It was his second year as a junior rider with the team.

Xavier Maynard rode a leg of the journey with the team this year and he raised over $1,000 for the ride, which wrapped up on Friday.

“The money raised from this event helps fund childhood cancer research and send kids to Camp Goodtimes. I want to help send kids to Camp Goodtimes, a place where I felt I fit in,” said Xavier. “Thanks for your support!”

“He is an amazing young boy who was diagnosed with cancer at age two, and a hero of mine,” said family friend Alice Swenson. “He made bracelets and sold them as well as took donations to raise over $1,000.”

The annual rides, which have happened for decades in some regions, tour through communities while raising money for pediatric cancer research through the Canadian Cancer Society and Camp Goodtimes.

Individual donations, as well as group, business and school contributions from across B.C. totalled more than $2 million.

The Vancouver Island tour raised $931,000, but with donations still coming in are expected to reach the $1-million mark. In the Fraser Valley, $320,000 was raised. During the Metro Vancouver tour, RCMP raised $578,000. In the North, a total of $224,000 was donated.
