Almost 800 safe rides home provided

Operation Red Nose in Abbotsford-Mission had a successful holiday season.

Operation Red Nose in Abbotsford and Mission provided a total of 768 safe rides homes over the holiday season.

This was a four per cent drop from the previous year. There was also a seven per cent drop in the number of volunteer shifts, with a total of 433 provided this season.

Christine Scott of PacificSport Fraser Valley, which runs Operation Red Nose in the area, said about 35 to 40 per cent of the volunteers were new this year, and it is hoped they will return for the 2013 campaign.

Meanwhile, the number of donations collected increased by 10.5 per cent over the 2011 total, coming in at $16,481.

Operation Red Nose is a designated-driver service provided during the holiday season. The service is free, but donations are accepted on behalf of PacificSport Fraser Valley, which provides travel and performance grants to athletes.
