The Aldergrove Extreme Home Repair team will be tackling two projects this spring.

Now in its 12th year, the Aldergrove "Acts of Kindness" team from the Aldergrove Seventh-day Adventist Church, volunteers their time to complete renovations and restorations of homes which need some "tender loving care."

Sponsors in the community also play an important role as they donate thousands of dollars worth of materials for the home make-overs.

"it is sometimes difficult to make choices with so many needs in our community, but we are feeling quite excited about our two medium-sized projects for this year," said project coordinator, Pastor Mike Dauncey.

This year the AOK team has decided to do two smaller but still major projects instead of one major project, to help two different families in the community.

Laura Canessa's family needs roof repairs on their home, while Mike Shufflebotham needs his home to be made wheelchair accessible.

Canessa is a single mother of three boys, Dillon, Nick and Lucas, and they have been battling a leaky house for some time. The wall on the north side has allowed moisture to enter the home, causing all sorts of problems with mildew and mold. There also are no heat ducts in the master bedroom or boys' room, which makes the rooms cold in winter.

Canessa cannot afford such a major repair, so the AOK team will take this project on so she can focus on being a mother and running her household.

In Shufflebotham's case, he suffered an injury to his thumb on January 27, 2010 at his welding job. Through a string of medical issues from this accident, the injury attacked his nervous system.

Fiev years later he is living with what is known as "complex regional pain syndrome" that greatly affected his right hand and has since travelled to his lower leg. He is very limited in his mobility and can no longer work.

AOK will take on the task of making his home wheelchair accessible, so life will be easier for Mike, his wife Misty and their children, Zack and Zoey.

The projects will launch on Sunday, May 3 and will be completed and unveiled, as in the past years, on Victoria Day, Monday, May 18.

"We invite you to be a part of something that not only improves a home and family, but also transforms a community and makes a positive impact on our neighborhood," said Dauncey.

Those who would like to help by volunteering their time should call Pastor Dauncey at 778-549-3896 or email extremehomevolunteer@gmail.com
