While all eyes are still on Fraser River water levels, the threat of flooding in the Abbotsford area has been downgraded.
On Wednesday, the BC River Forecast Centre modified its predictions. Earlier this week, it was expected that the gauge at Mission Bridge could reach as high as seven metres. The current forecast is estimating a height of approximately 6.3 to 6.4-meters at the Mission gauge.
That's about the same level experienced last weekend.
According to Wednesday's forecast, once the river hits that peak, levels are expected to recede towards the end of the weekend, and into next week. Unless additional severe weather (extreme heat or heavy rainfall in the Upper Fraser basin) occurs, river levels are expected to drop through the remainder of the freshet season.
Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said the forecast is good news for people living in Glen Valley, which is not protected by the city dykes.
Last weekend 20 homes were issued evacuation orders due to the flood threat. But Helmer said while the flood evacuation alert is still in place, it is unlikely another evacuation order will be needed.
"At those levels, the water is unlikely to reach any of the homes."
While water may still flow over River Road, Helmer said based on engineers' reports, the city will leave the road open.
"A little bit of water on the road will not be a problem."
City officials will continue to monitor water levels and condition in case of any changes.
On Thursday morning the Mission gauge was at 6.19 metres.
