A 31-year-old Langley man is behind bars after reportedly using a hatchet to rob two convenience stores.

Langley RCMP said in the early morning hours of Jan. 13, police received calls of two separate robberies at convenience stores in Langley – one at the Murrayville Esso and one in Brookswood.

Officers attended and spoke with the victims at the two locations and found that in both robberies the suspect produced an axe, said Cpl. Holly Largy.

Cigarettes, cash and a drawer from a cash register were taken.  A description of the suspect vehicle was given.  Air One was in the area and was able to locate it quickly, said Largy.

"Air One observed the vehicle as it drove through Langley at a high rate of speed, not stopping at intersections," said Largy.  The vehicle stopped at a home in south Langley.

Langley officers went there and found the vehicle parked in the driveway as described by Air One. The suspect was still sitting in the driver’s seat.  He was ordered to exit and placed under arrest.

Items matching the description of the items stolen were found scattered throughout the vehicle, in addition to the hatchet, said police.

Anthony James Robertson is charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of disguising his face with intent and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.  He has been remanded in custody since his arrest and will next appear in Surrey Provincial Could on Jan. 27.
