UPDATE: RCMP ‘confident’ public is safe after threat closes down KPU campuses

All five campuses were evacuated after a threat was made against KPU

RCMP in Surrey, Langley and Richmond are confident that Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s campuses are “safe” after all five were evacuated Wednesday following a reported threat.

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning (May 8), Surrey RCMP received word that a threat had been made against KPU.

As the threat was not specific to any one campus, the university made the decision to evacuate all five, located in Surrey, Langley and Richmond.

A campus alert was issued at around 11:30 a.m., campuses were evacuated and all classes cancelled for the day.

Surrey RCMP say officers “attended all KPU locations and, with the assistance of the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services, Explosives Devices Unit and the Metro Vancouver Transit Police, conducted thorough searches to ensure public safety.”

According to a media release issued at 4 p.m., RCMP are now “confident that the areas are safe for the public and there is no imminent threat to safety.”

Officers continue to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call RCMP at 604-599-0502, or contact Crime Stoppers if you wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca.
