Nine new judges have been appointed to B.C. provincial courts, and one of them will be in Abbotsford.
Gregory John Brown will begin his appointment Feb. 16. He was born in Victoria, raised in Burnaby and started his legal career in Prince George.
He has been a partner at McEachern, Harris and Brown in Maple Ridge for the last 19 years and is experienced in family law and civil litigation.
Of the other eight judges, two have been appointed to Surrey, two in Prince George, and one each in Nanaimo, Port Coquitlam, Penticton and Smithers.
According to a release from the Ministry of Attorney General, the chief judge has assigned the new judges to these communities based on matters such as caseload demands, recent transfers within the courts, retirements, or judges choosing to move to the part-time program.
The total cost to government to support one provincial court judge is up to $1.4 million annually. Counting the latest additions, the B.C. government has appointed 23 new provincial court judges since February 2010.
