Strange incident at Langley's Campbell Valley Park

Man jumps out of bushes, appears like a police officer, leaving one woman warning others to be aware

A Langley woman is warning others after having a scary encounter with a stranger who appeared like a police officer at Campbell Valley Park on Tuesday night.

Around 10:30 p.m., Monica Hillier was a passenger of a vehicle driving along 16 Avenue when the driver missed his turn at 200 Street. The only safe place to turn around was at the closed gates at the entrance to Campbell Valley Park.

As they pulled near the gates, the vehicles headlights flashed onto a man coming out of the bushes. In his hand was a flash light that was flashing red and blue colours.

"I assumed it was police because he approached our car very quickly," said Hillier. The man, she describes as having a full head of brown hair, Caucasian, clean shaven, around 40-years-old, five feet 11 inches.

They had their windows rolled up and the doors locked, she said.

"The man demanded several times that I roll down my window," she said. "I thought it was odd, because police usually will approach the driver not the passenger."

The man didn't say he was a police officer. He was wearing a reflective vest.

"I eventually rolled down the window and he asked if we had been drinking. We said 'no' and then he left," said Hillier.

The situation was odd enough that she has passed on the the information to Langley RCMP who are looking into it.
