Strong interest in pipeline open house at Walnut Grove

Langley residents had a chance to meet with Kinder Morgan officials and get more information.

About 150 people showed up to an open house on the Kinder Morgan pipeline twinning proposal, held Wednesday night in Walnut Grove.

Company officials were on hand to explain the National Energy Board process and answer questions. Some residents were upset that a new alignment for the second pipeline in Langley has not been settled on yet. The pipeline will be twinned through the eastern portion of Langley, but somewhere in the vicinity of Fort Langley the new pipeline will veer away from  the existing route, which goes through an urban area of Walnut Grove.

The pipeline could head to the planned alignment along the CN tracks, which it will follow into Surrey, somewhere near the Salmon River, or further west around or through Redwoods Golf Course. Fort Langley landowners have expressed concern about their water supply and possible contamination of the Salmon River if the pipeline is built in that area.

Meanwhile, Langley Township Councillor Kim Richter praised the NEB for accepting the Township's application for intervenor status in the pipeline hearings.

"I'm so glad council supported my motion to apply for intervenor status. Now the real work begins — we have to start preparing what we need to say," she said in a Facebook post.
