Smoke from forest fires has prompted an air quality advisory for the Lower Mainland

An air quality advisory for the Lower Mainland has been cancelled after rain clouds moved through the region overnight.

The advisory had been issued for the Fraser Valley Regional District and Metro Vancouver because of fine particulate matter stemming from wildfires elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest.

Metro Vancouver, which is responsible for air quality monitoring, issued the advisory Wednesday afternoon.

People with chronic underlying medical conditions were urged to avoid strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted. Exposure is of particular concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes and lung or heart disease.

The advisory was lifted Wednesday morning.
