Residents of Cloverdale and those on rural routes in Surrey and Langley may get their mail late on Wednesday, due to an evacuation of the Cloverdale post office for several hours on Wednesday morning.

At approximately 5:35 a.m. this morning, Surrey RCMP received a report from the Cloverdale Canada Post office regarding a large amount of white powder that fell from a package to the floor.

The precaution of evacuating the building took place and the Surrey Fire Department Hazmat team was called to  attempt to determine what the substance was, and whether the substance is dangerous.

Surrey RCMP were on site to assist with the evacuation and any other tasks that the fire department requires. There were been no injuries and no one has been taken to hospital. Contrary to some reports, there was no explosion of any kind.

After Surrey Fire Dept. Hazmat team entered the building to determine what the substance was after 8 a.m., it was determined that the powder was a harmless veterinary substance.

The Cloverdale post office is the point where rural route carriers pick up mail for delivery to routes in Surrey and some parts of Langley.
