Animal rights activists picketed a Langley pork processing plant on Fraser Highway.

A small group of demonstrators picketed transport trucks bringing pigs to the Britco Pork Inc. processing plant in Langley in the 22900 block of Fraser Highway this (Wednesday) morning.

They held signs with messages reading: “how much cruelty can U swallow,”  “Veganism saves live” and “Stop killing animals.”

Spokesperson Jeff Regear said the group was there “to make a public statement to show that we are not OK with treating animals as objects and it’s not OK to expose pigs to suffering. It’s not OK to do it just for the sake of our tastebuds.”

Regear said the protestors belonged to Langley Pig Save, part of the Canada Save Movement that aims to “bear witness to animals” as they arrive for slaughter.

Regear said the group was not making specific claims about Britco.

“It’s a general issue of how animals are treated on modern farms and slaughterhouses,” Regear said.

Britco quality assurance manager Michael Mensah-Wilson declined to comment on the protest, but defended the firm's animal handling procedures.

"I am not inclined to speculate on the motives of the protesters (but) we operate within regulatory confines," he said.

"When it comes to the welfare of animals, we take it very seriously and are committed to responsible farm animal care," Mensah-Wilson told The Times.

"That is shared by all our employees."

An online corporate web page describes the Langley operation, which is owned by Donald's Fine Foods, as a small, high-quality “specialty pork plant.”
