In loving memory ~
Douglas Allan Mead, age 81, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2023, in Langley, B.C., of Lewy Body dementia. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Judy (Haroutunian); their three children Larissa Mead-Wescott (Jon), of Lions Bay, B.C.; David Mead (Diane), of Westminster, CO; and Jennifer Schuett (Matt), of Coquitlam, B.C.; and eight adored grandchildren.
Doug was born in Royal Oak, Michigan to James and Donna Mead. He attended the University of Michigan where he studied Forestry, ultimately earning his PhD in Resource Planning at the University of Missouri. Doug started his career in the US Forest Service, then as an Assistant Professor of Forestry at Penn State University, and then as an Associate Professor in the Forestry program at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. His career moved from academia to industry in 1981, working for Shell Canada as their Senior Environmental Scientist until he retired in 2002, and then on a contract basis until 2007. In 2016, he and Judy moved from their long-time home in Calgary to Langley, B.C., nearer to Larissa and Jennie.
Doug's many interests and passions led to a full life. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and card player, and he was passionate about gardening. He was very physically active, playing basketball, softball, tennis and golf all his life. He travelled the world with Judy. Doug had a calm, easy presence and a witty sense of humour. He was well respected and set a wonderful example of a life well-lived. He will be greatly missed.
