April 18, 1922 - October 15, 2021
On Friday, October 15, 2021, our dearly loved mother, oma and great-grandmother Marrigje Elisabeth Vander Horst - nee de Jong, passed into glory at the blessed age of 99, at Manoah Manor in Langley BC. Born in the Netherlands, Marrigje lived through the Depression and World War II there. She married Jacob Vander Horst in 1946, and in 1948 emigrated to Canada with her young family, arriving - via Ontario and Southern Alberta - in BC's Lower Mainland in 1950. The immigration years were difficult, but thanks to a strong faith and sheer determination she and Jacob prevailed, raising 11 children mostly on farms in Ladner and Cloverdale. She is predeceased by her husband of 56 years (2003), her son Peter (1962), a grandson, and two greatgrandchildren. She is survived by her children, Allie (Brian) Dale- Johnson, Ena (Rob) Bontkes, Dick (Alida), Danny (Wyn), Jack (Linda), Margaret (Peter) Aikema, Mabel (Peter) Roukema, Eric (Juliette), Conrad (Dinah), Norman (Diane), and Gordon (Debbie); also, by 44 grandchildren who will remember how a visit to oma would always net them a chocolate or candy treat just before leaving; and by 107 greatgrandchildren. She was the best matriarch any large family could wish for, and we will cherish many wonderful memories. We already miss her strong, loving, supportive presence in our lives, but are thankful that she is safely in the arms of Jesus.
A memorial service was held Friday, October 22, 2021, in the Langley Canadian Reformed Church, with Pastor James Visscher officiating.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Manoah Manor for their loving care and understanding over the past years.
In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Manoah Manor.
