MARTENS, RITA (nee Penner), September 24, 1927 – May 18, 2006. Rita passed into glory peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the Langley Hospice. Rita was born in Jekaterinoslouw, Russia, where her father has a prosperous flour mill. At the age of two the family fled to China and three years later to Brazil, where she grew up, married and raised her children. In 1964, Rita and her husband Hans (1923-2004) and their 5 children immigrated to Canada. Mom loved to garden – growing vegetables and many, many flowers. She loved to bake buns, to cook, and to feed family & friends. Mom is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Hans, her parents Abram & Elisabeth Penner, siblings: Johann, Cornelius, Nikolai, Hein, Katie, Lydia & Helena; her son Alvin and her granddaughter Jenny. She will be forever remembered, with love, by her sister Catarina Huebert, in Brazil; her children: Benno (Leni), Luiza, Fred (Sally), Anelore (Dale), Regina (Keith); her grandchildren: Jennifer (Joe), Marlon (Cheryl), Mark (Nicole), Luella (Pat), Fredd, Jeff (Elsie), Troy (Trina), Scott, Leah, Paul, Patrick, Rita (Shawn); her great grandsons: Kasper, Timothy and Jonah, many nieces & nephews and friends all over the world. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Bethel Mennonite Church, 24687 56th Ave., Langley, B.C. Pastor Phil Wheaton officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Langley Hospice Society would be appreciated (20088 40A Ave., Langley, B.C. V3A 2Y6).
